TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa’s Christian Watson did not have to wait long to hear his name called in the second day of the NFL draft. The Plant High alumnus went to the Packers with the No. 34 overall pick (second pick of the second round). Green Bay moved up with the Vikings to snag him.
Watson was a late bloomer in high school, which explains why his only scholarship offer was to North Dakota State. He starred for the Bison, for whom he had 57 plays of at least 20 yards, won four Football Championship Subdivision national titles and caught 105 career passes for 2,140 yards and 14 touchdowns.
The 6-foot-4, 208-pound Watson wasn’t in the top tier of one of the best receiving classes of the modern era, but he did earn some first-round buzz heading into this week.
Watson will be expected to be an immediate contributor for the Packers and quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
