Not even months after its cinematic release in theatres across the globe, the musical blockbuster Wicked has already announced it will soon be made available for fans to watch at home to their heart’s content.
After a truly memorable press tour scored wows around the world, the lasting cultural relevance of Wicked is something to be studied. After two decades on Broadway, fans have been frothing all things Wicked since the film was announced in 2019, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.
And its popularity hasn’t dropped since the film came out. From countless memes holding space in our minds, to tense debates on whether singing in a cinema is appropriate, it seems fans are desperate for whatever Wicked content they can get.
Which is why we come to share some good news! (No, not that the Wicked Witch is dead.) Universal Studios recently announced that Wicked: Part One would soon be made available for fans to watch from the comfort of home, thanks to a digital release.
Even better news is that there’s as much as three hours of additional content, including deleted and extended scenes, behind-the-scenes extras, and even a sing-along version of the film.
So here’s everything we know about when and where you’ll be able to watch Wicked for digital download, and what will be included in it.
When does Wicked come out on digital download?
The Wicked film will be available for digital download to buy and rent from Monday, January 6, 2025.
On this date, Wicked will be exclusively available via digital download on all movie rental platforms like Apple and Google TV.
Unfortunately, there is not yet a confirmed date for when the film will be made available on streaming platforms, or to purchase a physical copy. But as soon as we know that, we’ll be sure to pass on the details.
What we do know, is the three hours of extra goodies there will be included in the digital download of Wicked.
What additional Wicked content will there be?
Hot damn, if the theatre kids weren’t already bouncing off the walls then they absolutely will be once January 6 passes and they get their hands on all the following bonus content.
Deleted and extended scenes are the backbone of any good release, and the amount of extra Shiz is sure to impress even the most hardcore fan. Here’s the full list of deleted/extended scenes:
- Pfannee & ShenShen Meet Glinda.
- Shiz Gazette Introduces Fiyero.
- Glinda’s Toss Toss Lessons.
- Elphaba & Fiyero in the Forest.
- Elphaba’s Promise To Glinda.
- Train Platform Farewell.
- Boq & Elphaba Talk Feelings.
- Train Ride to Emerald City.
- In the Emerald City.
- Palace Monkeys Chase.
And that’s just the deleted and extended scenes from the original movie! There’s still a tonne of additional content as well that was made solely for the digital release of the film, including:
- A sing-along version of the film.
- A Making of Wicked behind the scenes doco.
- A production designer tour of the Shiz University set.
- Interviews with cast and filmmakers about their feelings toward the Wicked Broadway musical.
- And an in-depth look at the Wizard of Oz’s throne room, with a tour from ‘Zaddy’ Jeff Goldblum himself.
Tallying up to an extra three hours of stuff to watch, surely this is enough stuff for fans to watch before next year’s release of Wicked: For Good.
