The UK billionaire Sanjeev Gupta’s troubled ownership of the Whyalla steelworks is over after the South Australian government rushed legislation through parliament to put the facility into administration. The SA premier, Peter Malinauskas, has promised “one of the most comprehensive industry support packages that this nation has ever seen” and Jim Chalmers signalled further announcements “in due course”.

Kevin Spacey has responded to Guy Pearce’s allegation that the actor “targeted him” during the filming of the 1997 film LA Confidential. Pearce had on Monday expanded further on his alleged experiences with Spacey, having called him “a handsy guy” in 2018. Spacey, who has been dogged by accusations of sexual misconduct, has conceded he made some “clumsy” approaches to men in the past, but never anything illegal.
