Why your iPhone might stop working on Tuesday - and the reason not to use it even if you can

Britain is sizzling in scorching temperatures with the heat making it hard for many of us to work. But did you know that it's not just people and pets that can struggle in the heat.

For Apple devices including iPhone, iPad and iPod can all face issues when the temperatures rise. They are so much at risk Apple has even put a warning on its site that users should not leave their tech in the car as it can get too hot.

According to its website iOS and iPadOS devices should be used where the ambient temperature is between 0º and 35ºC (32º to 95ºF). Both low or high temperature conditions can cause a device to change its behaviour to regulate its temperature.

And the tech giant is advising people to even think about whether to use their iOS or iPadOS device in very hot conditions. For if it is too hot is can permanently shorten battery life.

They urge people to store devices where the temperature is between -20º and 45ºC (-4º to 113ºF). And they added: "Don’t leave your device in your car because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range."

But if you have no choice other than to use your device here is the way to make the most of it, according to the Apple website.

If your device gets too warm

According to Apple iOS and iPadOS devices have built-in protections to prevent overheating. If the interior temperature of your device exceeds the normal operating range, your device will protect its internal components by attempting to regulate its temperature.

It recommends avoiding these temperature conditions and activities:

  • Avoid leaving your device in a car on a hot day.
  • Avoid leaving your device in direct sunlight for an extended period of time.
  • Avoid using certain features in hot conditions or direct sunlight for an extended period of time, such as GPS tracking or navigation in a car, playing a graphics-intensive game or using augmented reality apps.

If the interior temperature of your device exceeds the normal operating range, you may notice these changes:

  • Charging, including wireless charging, slows or stops.
  • The display dims or goes black.
  • Mobile radios enter a low-power state. The signal may weaken during this time.
  • The camera flash is temporarily disabled.
  • Performance slows with graphics-intensive or augmented reality apps or features.

Also, if you are using the device to navigate, it may show the alert: "Temperature: iPhone needs to cool down" and turn off the display. It will still provide audible directions however and when approaching a turn, the display will illuminate.

If you see a temperature warning screen

How will you know if your device is too hot? According to apple once it exceeds a certain temperature threshold, it will present a temperature warning screen. However even if the iPhone shows this message it may still be able to make emergency calls.

Once this message has appeared it is important to cool down the device so it will work again. Apple suggests: "To resume use of your device as quickly as possible, turn it off, move it to a cooler environment (away from direct sunlight) and allow it to cool down."

If you see a Restore Paused notification

If the device exceeds the temperature threshold in the middle of an iCloud backup it might temporarily pause the restore. A message advising: "Restore Paused. Restoring from iCloud will resume when this [device] cools down" will appear.

Apple explains: "This pause keeps your device within an acceptable operating temperature. Your restore will resume when the device cools down."
