Why USA played special role for Queen Camilla and Kate Middleton when they became royals

The first foreign tour of anyone who marries into the Royal Family has always been the subject of great excitement - whether it was The Princess of Wales or The Duchess of Sussex.

While a number of inaugural tours have been to large Commonwealth nations, two female members of the Firm both got their first taste of royal duties abroad in the US.

Both The Queen Consort and The Princess of Wales spent at least part of their earliest official trip Stateside.

Following their wedding seven months earlier on April 9, Charles and Camilla embarked on their first official 8-day tour together.

They were met with huge crowds everywhere they went as they visited New York, Washington D.C., New Orleans and San Francisco.

The-then Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall were heralded as "a down-to-earth royal twosome" by the Washington Post during their visit which lasted from November 1st - 8th.

The couple's visit started in New York where the pair paid their respects at Ground Zero, unveiled a British Memorial Garden at Hanover Square in Manhattan, met with United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and attended a reception at the Museum of Modern Art.

They then went onto Washington DC, where Charles laid a wreath in front of the capital's World War II Memorial and dined with President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush at the White House.

The Princess of Wales also spent part of her first foreign trip in the States.

Following a successful nine-day tour of Canada in 2011, the newly married couple flew to California where they spent three days meeting well-wishers and Hollywood royalty.

Shortly after arriving, the couple attended a reception in the garden of the Consul General’s residence in Los Angeles, where they stayed during their visit.

The following day, Prince William played at the Santa Barbara Polo Club in a charity match - the Foundation Polo Cup - in aid of the American Friends of the Foundation. After riding to victory, the-then Duchess presented the trophy to her husband and his winning teammates.

The couple were then the guests of honour at the BAFTA Brits To Watch event, held at the Belasco Theatre in Downtown LA and were pictured alongside the likes of Tom Hanks, Barbra Streisand, Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Lopez.

Elsewhere during their three-day visit, they carried out an engagement at the Inner-City Arts School which offers children from deprived neighbourhoods in LA art classes and other forms of support.

This trip marked The Prince and Princess of Wales' first visit to the US in an official capacity, but they were back three years later for an exciting visit to New York.

They returned at the end of last year to hold the second annual Earthshot Prize awards in Boston.
