Why Tyrell Malacia is absent for Manchester United's match against Nottingham Forest

Tyrell Malacia is absent from Manchester United's squad to play Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon due to a sore knee.

With Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane unavailable through injury, multiple changes were expected in defence to play Forest, but when the squad news emerged, it became clear that Malacia had not travelled to the City Ground.

The defender has been forced to miss the game with a sore knee, which means a back line of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Harry Magurie and Diogo Dalot - the latter will play at left-back - will be seen against Forest.

Although the back line has changed, Ten Hag has maintained faith in the front six players that started against Sevilla, which means Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes and Marcel Sabitzer are set to make up the midfield in the centre again.

Antony is also set to start on the right wing, with Anthony Martial leading the line and Jadon Sancho down the left channel.

Ten Hag discussed his team selection with BBC Sport and said: "We are in the position we want to be in, not many clubs in Europe are still fighting for three trophies. The title is gone but [reaching] the Champions League is the aim and also a trophy.

“Points get more expensive and you have to fight for it like against Brentford and Everton. We were maybe only good for 55 minutes against Sevilla and then you get hammered. We have to act as machines.

"They [Lindelof and Maguire] have the rhythm, they play together often and have the experience. They have to show they are in this team. I have four really good centre-halves, now it is up to them.

“For us every game is big - FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Europa League, every game. That is the approach, he [Martial] is happy he is on the pitch. We need all 11 players with a performance, a team performance and when we do that we have a good chance to win the game."
