Why Tottenham hijacked Everton's Arnaut Danjuma deal and who will be their next transfer

mattyice1311: "What are your thoughts on Arnaut Danjuma? Seems a great signing to provide competition to Son."

Alasdair says: "I think it's a good squad move for Spurs and he will provide extra competition and options on the left and up front. I'd say I'm not entirely sure it's the best move for the player as at Everton he'd start far more games, while at Spurs he'll have to work his way up the pecking order with Son and a £60m summer signing in Richarlison ahead of him. However, he could get to play Champions League football which of course is such a big draw as well as six months of working under Antonio Conte.

"Along with Richarlison, Danjuma also offers the Spurs boss another alternative to give Kane some rest from time to time. He gives Conte more ways in which to change matches from the bench or in the starting line-up."

Runes: "Are Spurs still not looking at central defenders this window? Has there been any progress on Pedro Porro?"

Alasdair says: "The plan was to sign two central defenders this coming summer, a left-sided one and one for the right/centre. The only way I see that changing is if a centre-back heads out the door in the final week of the window and Conte makes it clear that he needs a replacement or Spurs are left short.

"As for Porro, it's still a deal that's in the balance but at least Sporting appear to have shifted on their initial insistence of only accepting the full up front £39.5m release clause and these things can move quickly. The player is keen to play for Spurs and now it's down to the north London club to make the deal as attractive as possible for the Portuguese side who were not desperate to sell the Spaniard."

purky13: "Will the pre-season tour be in the USA?"

Alasdair says: "The plan last summer was to head to the United States this year so hopefully that's still the case as the pre-season tours in America have been excellent, although South Korea, Singapore and Shanghai were also terrific. It's great to see the passion of those who follow Spurs from the other side of the world."

Bt_10: "Is there a buy option or some sort of clause for a permanent Danjuma transfer in the summer?"

Alasdair says: "It's still to be confirmed as negotiations are being finalised. At this current stage it looks like one was discussed, although there's been a few loans at Spurs in recent seasons where the option has dropped out late on in the process or not eventually been agreed."

thomasa: "Was there a reason for the exclusion of Gil and Sarr from the bench against Fulham? Knocks, injuries or potential loan moves?"

Alasdair says: "Gil was a knock in training that's kept him out of the past two matches. When it comes to Sarr, I think it was just Conte rotating him and Skipp with their chances at the moment as he did in the starting XI when Bentancur and Bissouma were both injured. You can't rule out loan moves, particularly for Gil, but with Lucas' injury problems it would seem odd to let Gil go out at this point as an option on the right unless they bring in another attacker or the Brazilian is deemed close enough to a return."

Okan5858: "Could Djed Spence still be loaned out?"

Alasdair says: "It looks likely with the player needing minutes and Bayer Leverkusen, Southampton, Crystal Palace and West Ham all having registered an interest among others in the 22-year-old. If Spurs can get the Pedro Porro deal over the line then it makes it even more of a no-brainer."

tulsamatt: "To what extent do you believe the performance last night impacted this signing, if at all? We saw the players - per Conte's interview - commit to this season and back him, in a sense, amid all the external strife. Is this an indicator of the club doing the same?"

Alasdair says: "It's a great point but I don't think it probably played any part. Danjuma was offered to Spurs this month and they seem to have got wind of the particulars of the Everton deal and liked the idea of it. It's tough on Everton but Tottenham have also been in this position before and it doesn't help that the Toffees are in such turmoil right now.

"Danjuma, who has now begun his medical at Hotspur Way, ticks the box for a short-term Conte signing in case the Italian does head off this summer but also if he succeeds then Spurs could look to make it a more permanent deal."

FredPencil: "From what you have heard, is there any chance that Conte could change his preferred system any time soon? He obviously doesn't have the players for this system, or is it just a case of stubbornness?"

Alasdair says: "He was asked that in a press conference about a week ago. I don't think from his answer that the chances are particularly high."

Ctrl Alt Dele: "With Danjuma in for depth do you think Conte could try Sonny at wing back? It seems other than Harry and the goalkeepers, Conte might try anyone at wing back."

Alasdair says: "I think we've been there with Pochettino. I remember him playing Son there in the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea and it just didn't work."

timmo27: "Is there any truth with the Pochettino rumours as it seems like Conte has told people that he's not staying?"

Alasdair says: "I think it's still too early to think about other managers. Unless there's a huge fall-out between Conte and Levy or the points suddenly dry up during what is a decent run of fixtures after the City game, I can't see why a decision would be made before the end of the season.

"As for Mauricio Pochettino returning if Conte were to leave, it would be a move that would go down well with the fans who felt he was never truly backed while the Argentine has said himself that he has unfinished business at Spurs. It would be interesting certainly at a boardroom level because from what I understand it would be a move that certainly split the Tottenham hierarchy."
