Why Tottenham have completed Fraser Forster and Ivan Perisic transfers before the window opens

After two summer signings so far, Spurs fans are excited for what could be in the works for the rest of the summer transfer window following the recent announcement of an extra £150 million to be invested in the club.

Spurs have so far announced the signing of Inter Milan's Ivan Perisic along with Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster, with both players joining not long after the conclusion of the Premier League season. In fact, both signings have come in before the start of the transfer window, which officially opens opens this Friday (June 10).

The reason that Spurs were able to announce both signings so soon is due to both players having come in as free agents. Under the Bosman ruling, clubs are free to negotiate with players whose contracts have less than six months to run. The rule was brought in to protect players' interests and ensure they have the best possible chance of securing a contract in the event of their release.

However, the two players, despite the announcements, will not officially become employees of Tottenham Hotspur FC until July 1st with footballers' contracts generally expiring at the official end of the season on June 30th.

There are some cases where clubs announce transfers before the transfer window opens, as is the case of Manchester City's recent capture of Norwegian striker Erling Haaland. City released a statement stating that the deal had been agreed and that the transfer would be completed on July 1st.

In truth, there is no law governing when clubs can announce transfers of players, although it is arguably in the best interest of clubs to reserve such news for when a deal is 100 per cent completed in order to avoid any embarrassment!
