For what feels like the one millionth offseason in the row, the Tennessee Titans once again need offensive line help. It’s possible Tennessee will only return one starter (Peter Skoronski) from their 2023 unit in 2024.
The Titans are off to an inspiring start in their quest to rebuild the trenches. The team hired one of the best offensive line coaches in the league in the form of Bill Callahan, son of new Titans head coach, Brian Callahan.
With many holes to fill, Tennessee could turn to a cheaper option at center in pending free-agent Nick Harris, who has connections to the elder Callahan.
Why? Let’s break it down.
Rave reviews from Bill Callahan
Harris was set to become the heir to J.C. Tretter’s throne before a preseason injury ended his 2022 campaign. Ethan Pocic seized the role after that, but new Titans offensive line coach Bill Callahan loved Harris’ progress:
“It’s fun to see his progress and watch his development,” Callahan said of Harris back in 2022, per Matt Florjancic. “To see him grow, not only physically, but mentally.
“What’s really impressive is his dialogue off the field, and the questions that he asks. They’re really well thought out and applicable,” Callahan added.
It is clear that Callahan has taken a liking to not only Harris the player, but the person as well.
A successful return in 2023
After a knee injury derailed his 2022 season, Harris returned in a reserve role in 2023. He filled in admirably at center and right guard. The 25-year-old played 311 snaps and surrendered just 3 pressures. His efforts in pass protection earned a solid 66.3 pass block grade, according to PFF.
There is a lot to like about Harris as a buy-low candidate for the Titans. He’s young (25), has a connection to Callahan and offers positional versatility with his ability to play guard and center.
Harris is an excellent athlete for his position. He earned elite speed grades and good explosion grades at the 2020 NFL draft Combine.
The Titans would be wise to explore Harris’ untapped potential in free agency this March.
