Why thousands of people in Leeds are wearing red today

Thousands of people in Leeds are donning red clothes today, with famous landmarks across the city also being lit up in scarlet colours.

Schools, businesses and individuals are all taking part to support Wear Red Day, an annual fundraising event for Leeds Children's Heart Surgery Fund (CHSF).

The charity supports 17,000 people every single year across the north who have congenital heart disease.

Not only does the charity raise cash for lifesaving equipment on the Leeds Congenital Heart Unit at Leeds Children's Hospital, but they also provide practical support and advice to families.

Among them is Fran Simpson, whose daughter Savannah had open-heart surgery when she was just three weeks old.

Fran couldn't even properly hold her baby for the first six weeks of her life because she was so unwell, and the single mum described it as "the worst experience you can ever go through".

But CHSF provided her with accommodation at Eckersley House, a "home from home" just a stone's throw from her baby girl who was staying at Leeds Children's Hospital.

"CHSF has been a lifesaver," said Fran.

"They rang me all the time to check I was OK. You forget about yourself because you are just thinking about your child, but in reality, you are breaking down inside.

"It was so nice to see what I felt without feeling guilty."

To mark the occasion, people all over Leeds are wearing red clothes to raise awareness of the charity and donating what they can to CHSF.

Leeds Civic Hall and Leeds Town Hall are among the city centre venues which will be illuminated in red tonight to mark the event too.

Rachel McElroy at Cloud Gateway and Sophie Morley at Clarion Solicitors are among thousands getting involved in Wear Red Day (CHSF)

Wear Red Day was first launched in 2012, when Carmen Greene's five-year-old son needed open-heart surgery. Along with her sister Emma Emmerson, they kickstarted a fundraising tradition which has so far raised more than £330,000.

Carmen said: "I’m so proud of what Wear Red Day has become and achieved through Children’s Heart Surgery Fund and their supporters. We never imagined it would raise this much money for patients with congenital heart disease.

"Please help us celebrate the 10th anniversary this year, and take part in whatever way you can to help future children and families."
