Why there's no VAR in Man City vs Chelsea, Arsenal vs Brighton or Nottingham Forest vs Spurs

The third round of the Carabao Cup got underway on Tuesday, November 8, and finishes on Thursday November 10. Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs were all drawn against fellow Premier League clubs and are all in action on Wednesday evening.

In perhaps the tie of the round, the Blues battle Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium while Arsenal welcome Brighton to Emirates Stadium and Spurs make their second trip of the season to the City Ground to face Nottingham Forest.

The rules do slightly differ to other domestic competitions. In the early stages of the FA Cup, a game ending level would see a replay played at the away team's home stadium. Fixtures that finish level in the Carabao Cup will be decided on the night with a penalty shootout as was the case on Tuesday evening where League Two Gillingham dumped out Brentford.

There is also no VAR in operation in until the competition reaches the semi-final stage where those who compete in the final at Wembley on February 26 will be decided over two legs.

The full rules for the 2022/23 Carabao Cup can be found on the competition's official website.
