Why the Diogo Jota 'offside' for Liverpool was not what it seemed against Nottingham Forest

Diogo Jota was Liverpool’s hero as they booked their place in the semi-finals of the FA Cup on Sunday evening.

Jota scored the only goal of the game against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. The forward struck in the second-half in a tight quarter-final tie.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will now face Manchester City in the semi-finals at Wembley. The game is scheduled to take place a week after the two teams meet in the Premier League.

However, there was doubt over whether Jota’s goal should have stood. A VAR check took place following the goal after the forward appeared to be offside.

But TV replays with the VAR lines included showed how Jota was judged to have been onside in the build-up. However, that didn’t stop questions being asked on social media.

And taking to Twitter in the immediate aftermath to the goal, Dale Johnson of ESPN explained why the goal was given.

He wrote: “The VAR uses the angle which is best for the tech and produces the clearest result. Jota is offside WITHOUT the tolerance level (lines touch).

“When it's this close, only defensive line is shown for clarity (no overlapping lines). Remember, our eyes can't work out perspective.”

Before adding: “A player in the forefront of a 2D image will usually appear further forward than a player behind on close calls.

“It's about perspective and how our eyes read an image. Also, it doesn't matter which angle the VAR used, as the tech is mapped to the pitch on all angles.”

Speaking on the goal, Jota said post-match: “Yeah I thought it was tight, I always trust myself to be onside, but you never know.”
