Why Spezia chief's Jakub Kiwior admission justifies Edu transfer move as Arsenal agree £21m deal

Arsenal look set to confirm their second January arrival imminently with Jakub Kiwior joining from Spezia and the latest comments from the sporting director at the Italian club highlights more excellent recruitment from Mikel Arteta and Edu.

A £21million deal with Spezia for Kiwior has been agreed with an initial £17.5million transfer, potentially followed by a further £3.5million in add-ons, football.london understands.

Kiwior, who will sign a contract until 2027 with the option to extend by a further year, was in attendance to watch Arsenal's enthralling 3-2 victory over Manchester United on Sunday. Despite being sat alongside Edu in the executive seats at the Emirates Stadium, Arteta was still hesitant to go into any detail about the 22-year-old's arrival after the match. "We can talk about that when it’s finalised," he told football.london in his post-match press conference.

The Polish international looks set to be a shrewd signing from the Gunners given his background in the Anderlecht youth academy and his on-pitch versatility. Throughout his career, he has been played all across midfield, with particular impressive stints in a holding role at Spezia, before being shifted to play on the left of a back three this season.

Attacking depth was added to the squad in the form of Leandro Trossard who joined on a permanent transfer from Brighton last week and now Kiwior looks set to be capable of providing depth in two positions that desperately need it. Along with being a left-footed alternative to Gabriel Magalhaes, Kiwior can fill the role of Thomas Partey, who would be greatly missed through any possible injury, if necessary.

Spezia Sporting Director Stefano Melissano has now spoken out on the impending transfer and his comments, along with how Kiwior can help the Gunners, only strengthens claims that Edu has once again made a smart recruitment decision.

Speaking to Dazn, via Calcio Mercato, Melissano said: “It’s a pride for everyone, from the club to the player. We are proud and happy that Jakub has this experience in one of the top ten clubs in the world.

“We’ve lost an excellent player and youngster, but we are still Spezia, we’ll continue to have our identity. We’re happy, our transfer market was the result of work planned previously."
