The New Orleans Saints had a massive hole at left tackle after Terron Armstead departed via free agency last month, and they filled it with Northern Iowa’s Trevor Penning in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft.
They’ve found success investing early draft picks in their offensive line, and the Saints are certainly hoping for more of the same with this selection.
Penning is a mean blocker, constantly tossing defenders to the floor, and always having his nose in the grit. He has unlimited potential with his size, athleticism, and attitude. He excels as a run blocker, shoving himself into his opponent and jumping them to the floor. He does well to engage at the second level, bringing equal amounts of tenacity there.
He should immediately start at left tackle opposite Ryan Ramczyk, another equally mean bookend blocker. This should make one of the NFC’s best offensive line units even better.
