The New Orleans Saints had what looked to be potentially their first touchdown of the day against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, on a pass to the right side of the endzone to Marquez Valdes-Scantling. However, after initially being called a touchdown on the field, it was quickly overturned and called an incompletion.
The Saints had the option to challenge this play as they still had time available, but instead elected not to and went for a field goal anyway to take an early 6-3 lead. This decision could have gone either way, as it did look like a catch, but after it was overturned there needed to be substantial evidence to call it in the Saints’ favor, and that part is unclear and the ball did move around quite a bit even if possessed by Valdes-Scantling.
It was a hard choice to make, and the Saints ultimately decided against it.
