Why Ruben Loftus-Cheek hasn't been involved in Chelsea training as Reece James makes return

Ruben Loftus-Cheek is not currently training with the Chelsea first team due to the injury he sustained in the defeat to Newcastle United prior to the World Cup break. However, the Blues have been handed a big boost with Reece James returning for today's light session in Abu Dhabi.

Loftus-Cheek was replaced inside the opening five minutes of the defeat at St James' Park with a calf problem and has since been undergoing treatment at Cobham. He has travelled with the squad out but isn't expected to return to training ahead of the friendly against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Graham Potter and his staff have taken 25 players – including 12 from the Development Squad – out to Abu Dhabi for a week-long warm-weather training camp. James, Wesley Fofana and Ben Chilwell were included as they continue their recoveries from knee and hamstring injuries respectively.

football.london was told tentative plans were in place for James to return to training in the Middle East following the knee ligament injury sustained in the win at San Siro over AC Milan and the England international undertook the light session that was held at Chelsea's training base this evening.

Fofana and Chilwell were not involved but Carney Chukwuemeka, who was ruled out prior to the World Cup break with a hamstring issue, has rejoined the makeshift first-team group, which includes the likes of Trevoh Chalobah, Marc Cucurella, Jorginho, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Armando Broja.
