Why refuse collectors from across the UK will be racing along the coast near Bristol

Bin men and women from across the UK will racing along Weston-super-Mare seafront - for the annual National Refuse Championships. Heralded as the seaside event everyone has ‘bin’ waiting for, the competition will take arrive in the resort on June 17 from 10am to 5pm.

The free event, organised by Refuse Vehicle Solutions, is an annual celebration of the people who collect the UK’s waste and recycling. The challenge will see refuse collectors to compete with colleagues from across the UK in a test of strength and stamina – while raising vital funds for Alzheimer’s Society.

There are heats throughout the day with 24 teams competing - loading wheelie bins with bags of sand before pushing them to refuse vehicles. The winning team will collect the National Refuse Champions 2023 trophy.

There will also be wheelie fun rides for young children, as well as hot dog, burger and drinks stands, along will be a raffle and prizes to be won. Alzheimer’s Society staff and volunteers will be on hand at the arena’s information stand to answer any questions about dementia, provide information and signpost to local support services.

Over the years the event, first held in Weston in 2017, has raised tens of thousands of pounds for the charity. Alzheimer's Society Community Fundraiser Zena Jones said: “It’s been exciting to watch the National Refuse Championships grow from the first races on Weston’s beachfront back in 2017.

"To date, the event has raised an incredible £53,492.05 for Alzheimer’s Society. Alzheimer’s Society is a vital source of support and a powerful force for change for everyone affected by dementia. Money raised by the event helps fund life-changing support services and cutting-edge research.

“The National Refuse Championships wouldn’t happen were it not for the team at Refuse Vehicle Solutions who generously donate their time and resources to organise it. Our huge thanks to the team for all their hard work and amazing support putting on this fantastic family event. We hope everyone has an excellent day.“
