Why Princes Harry and Andrew were forced to wear suits rather than military uniform

Most of the senior members of the Royal Family wore military uniform today as the Queen made her final journey - but two of them were not allowed. King Charles III led the historic procession of his late mother's coffin from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall along with his siblings and two sons.

The new monarch, Princess Anne, Prince Edward and Prince William were all in military uniform for the special occasion, with tens of thousands of people lining the streets along the route, but Prince Andrew and Prince Harry cannot so they are wearing morning suits.

While still part of the Royal Family, the pair are non-working members so will not be seen in military uniform.

However, sources have said Prince Andrew will be allowed to do so as a "special mark of respect" for the Queen at the final vigil in Westminster Hall when he stands guard around her coffin.

The Duke of York, who retained his rank as a Vice Admiral, is expected to wear the corresponding uniform.

Andrew stepped down from public life after the furore over his friendship with paedophile billionaire Jeffrey Epstein.

It came after one of the paedophile’s victims, Virginia Roberts, alleged Andrew sexually abused her when she was a minor under US law. He has strenuously denied all the allegations.

Earlier this year, he paid a £12million out-of-court settlement to end a civil case in the US.

Andrew gave up his HRH status and was stripped of all honorary military roles, including Colonel of the Grenadier Guards, by his mother the Queen in January this year.

His nephew, Prince Harry, is not wearing military uniform today and won't for any of the upcoming occasions.

Harry, who saw action on the front line during two tours of duty in Afghanistan, will be in civilian dress for official events including the funeral.

On Tuesday, the Sussex spokesperson said: "[Prince Harry] will wear a morning suit throughout events honouring his grandmother.

"His decade of military service is not determined by the uniform he wears and we respectfully ask that focus remain on the life and legacy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II", according to royal commentator and author Omid Scobie.

Harry lost his honorary military titles after deciding to step down as a senior working royal with wife Meghan in 2020.

At the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral in April 2021, the issue of uniform was dealt with by the Queen who decided that no members of the Royal Family should wear uniform.

It was a break with tradition but seen as the most eloquent solution to a host of problems.

At the procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall today, Andrew is wearing a morning suit.

But he is allowed to keep his medals and decorations, including the South Atlantic Medal for service in the Falklands War.

He also has Royal Navy Long Service Medals with Bars, Canadian Forces Decoration with Bar, New Zealand Commemoration Medal and the Order of the Garter Star.

The Queen's second son also has ones relating to his mother, such as Her Majesty The Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal, Her Majesty The Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, Her Majesty The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal and Her Majesty The Queen's Platinum Jubilee Medal

Details of which medals Prince Harry would be wearing were not released before the procession took place.
