Why Paul Scholes thinks Roy Keane is an underrated Manchester United captain

Paul Scholes has hailed Roy Keane for his ability to "do everything" when he was captain of Manchester United, claiming the quality he possessed was "underrated".

The pair won countless pieces of silverware together at Old Trafford, most notably the iconic Treble in the 1998/99 season. Keane was known for his demanding standards and wore his heart on his sleeve in every game.

His character has been attested to many a time but Scholes feels his playing attributes are somewhat overlooked. Speaking on BT Sport ’s Premier League Storybook podcast, which is released on Saturday, he said: “He [Keane] could do everything.

“Underrated a little bit with his quality on the ball. Great passer, I loved the way he stuck balls into his centre forwards.”

Scholes detailed how Keane was that voice on the pitch that elevated the whole United team’s level. He likened it to having a second boss.

He added: “He felt the responsibility to run a team because he’d become the captain by this point, and he took responsibility to take this team to the next level.

“It was infectious to everyone. Don’t get me wrong, he was a man who demanded a lot out of his team. It was like having a manager on the football pitch.”

Premier League Storybook with Jake Humphrey is part of a new series of free podcasts and audio documentaries from BT Sport Pods. Episode 7: The Treble Winners with Paul Scholes is available from Saturday 15th October. For more info, please visit: btsport.com/pods
