Why One Special Kid Is Going to Become SpaceX's Youngest Software Engineer

Space exploration corporation SpaceX had made an unusual and exciting new hire -- a 14-year-old boy from California. Kairan Quazi may be young, but he's graduating from Santa Clara University with a degree in computer science and engineering.

According to his parents, Quazi has been speaking in full sentences since he was two years old. When he was 9 years old, it was decided that a third-grade Quazi was ready to fast-forward his education.

“During third grade, it became very obvious to my teachers, my parents, and my pediatrician that mainstream education wasn’t the right path for my accelerated learning ability,” Quazi said in an interview. “I went from being a third-grade mutineer to really feeling validated intellectually."

While in school, Quazi got some hands-on experience interning with Intel Labs. He was the only undergraduate intern on his team. Now, Quazi is graduating college and on to start his new job in Washington state, where his mom will be joining him. He'll join SpaceX’s Starlink team as a software engineer in July.

Santa Clara's City Council on June 13 officially congratulated the young man. Councilmember Raj Chahal thanked the organizations that created opportunities for this extraordinary student.

“I would also like to compliment institutions like SpaceX and Intel," he said, "which took basically exceptional out-of-the-box steps to make sure this thing happened."
