Hidden in the mid-Wales countryside lies one of Wales' most treasured landmarks, a chain of dams and reservoirs set against a backdrop one of the country's most picturesque beauty spots.
Originally built 100 years ago to supply clean water to Birmingham, the six dams of the Elan Valley in Powys have attracted visitors from all over the UK for their wildlife, geology, history and spectacular scenery.
But recent visitors have been left puzzled as to why water levels in Craig Goch and Pen y Garreg appear dramatically low.

Dwr Cymru Welsh Water, who overtook responsibility for the Elan Estate, dams and reservoirs in 1974, has explained it is all part of a £2m investment into safeguarding the assets.
The work is expected to last from June 2022 to early 2023 as part of essential improvement work on Craig Goch dam, diverting water to Claerwen reservoir.
A spokesperson for Dwr Cymru Welsh Water said: "Welsh Water are working closely with our contractors, Morgan Sindall, to undertake essential improvement work on the Craig Goch dam, within the Elan Valley, from June 2022 to early 2023.
"We are investing £2m to improve the pipes and valves which form part of the dam. To ensure our reservoirs and dams are maintained to the highest standard we undertake rigorous health and safety checks, following a recent inspection this work was deemed necessary to safeguard the assets at Craig Goch.
"This has meant we’ve had to drawdown the water levels at Graig Coch and divert the water to Claerwen reservoir until our work is complete. Once the improvements are complete the reservoir will refill and return to it’s natural level."
