Why Monday is a Bank Holiday despite New Year's Day being on Sunday

Christmas might be over, but there is still another Bank Holiday to make the most of next week.

2023 is just around the corner, and whether you're making any New Year's resolutions or not, it's a special time to ring in the next 365 days with loved ones. Some people enjoy a night out partying to celebrate the New Year, while others prefer to have a quiet one in, watching the fireworks on TV.

But, for the second year in a row, New Year's Day falls on a weekend. Typically it's a Bank Holiday - while New Year's Eve isn't.

As New Year's Day falls on a Sunday in 2023 (January 1), it calls for a substitute Bank Holiday in the week instead. That's why Monday January 2 2023 is a Bank Holiday, and not the Sunday - which means we get a three-day weekend to enjoy.

This year, Christmas also fell on a weekend with December 25 landing on a Sunday. Boxing Day, which is also a Bank Holiday, was on Monday (December 26), so the Christmas Day substitute Bank Holiday fell on the next normal weekday, which was Tuesday December 27.

That meant most people got to enjoy a bumper four-day Christmas weekend this year.

2023 will see us gain an extra Bank Holiday, with the King's coronation taking place in May. King Charles III will be crowned in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey on Saturday, May 6. We will then get another Bank Holiday to celebrate the occasion on Monday, May 8.
