Why Michy Batshuayi’s Nottingham Forest deadline day transfer from Chelsea fell through

Nottingham Forest have had a busy transfer window as Steve Cooper built his squad for the Premier League this season.

The Reds have completed a total of 21 new signings since the end of last season, breaking the English record of the most new arrivals in a single transfer window. The last of those was a loan deal for Rennes defender Loic Bade.

Forest did work to bring one extra face to the club before the deadline, but a deal for Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi fell through on the 11pm deadline. A deal had been agreed for the forward to join the club on a permanent deal, with it reported that Forest had agreed to pay off the remainder of his contract at Stamford Bridge.

However, despite the deal getting close, the Belgian didn’t complete a move to the City Ground before the deadline. Reasons behind the collapse of the deal have now been reported.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano , the deal didn’t go through because Chelsea didn’t send the paperwork to Forest in time. The Blues were said to be too ‘busy’ working on deals that saw Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Denis Zakaria both join late in the window.

Forest were therefore unable to themselves complete a deal for Batshuayi. The striker could still however leave Stamford Bridge this summer. Romano adds that Turkish side Fenerbahce are now entering the race to sign the 28-year-old.

A deal would be able to be done between the clubs as the Turkish transfer window remains open for another week. Fenerbahce could therefore take advantage of Forest not completing the deal in time.

Batshuayi has been with Chelsea since the summer of 2016. He spent last season out on loan in Turkey where he scored 14 goals in 33 Super Lig appearances for Besiktas.
