Why Mason Mount may have played his last Chelsea game amid Liverpool and Arsenal transfer links

The future of Chelsea star Mason Mount is still uncertain heading into the summer transfer window, where a move away could be facilitated. The England international has just over 12-months remaining on his current contract, which may prompt an exit to avoid leaving on a free.

Plenty of teams have been linked over a switch, with Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United and Bayern Munich all said to be in the running for his signature. Despite a difficult season that has been plagued with inconsistent form and injuries, interim boss Frank Lampard has said that Mount still has a huge role to play at the club.

"Mason has always been a fantastic player for me at Derby and Chelsea," the former midfielder said on his return press conference. "I know he's had a few slight injury problems. I need to speak to him and find out where he's at, but I know what I get from Mason. He's a huge player for Chelsea."

While there would have been hopes that Mount could recapture his best form under Lampard, it appears as though that won't be the case. The Cobham academy graduate is now set to miss the rest of the season as injury troubles have meant that he has a minor chance of returning for the final game of the season.

Lampard said in his pre-Brentford press conference: "Reece James unavailable. Probably for the season. Mason Mount probably the same. Potential for the last game but probably not." It means that Mount, with the rumours surrounding an exit, may have already played his last game for the club.

That will have been from the bench in the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Real Madrid, where the Blues lost 2-0 and crashed out of the competition. It remains to be seen if that is his last game though, with plenty still to determine over his future and whether he will be a Chelsea player next season.
