Why Manchester United have left Dean Henderson, Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial out of Leeds squad

Manchester United are without Dean Henderson and Anthony Martial for the first pre-season friendly of the summer as both are continuing to recover from muscle tears.

Erik ten Hag has also left Donny van de Beek behind at Carrington, with the Dutch midfielder following an individual training programme as he seeks to get back to full fitness after a knee injury that has kept him out since January.

Van de Beek has been in full training throughout this week, but wasn't included in the 26-man travelling squad for the friendly against Leeds in Oslo on Wednesday.

Henderson has been absent since January with a thigh injury and although he's been back at Carrington for pre-season training, he's not yet in full training. Martial missed the FA Cup final with a hamstring injury and while he was also back at Carrington last week, he hasn't been spotted doing any training with the ball as he works his way back to fitness.

Henderson, Van de Beek and Martial could all still leave the club this summer. Henderson is wanted by Nottingham Forest and is set to move to the City Ground if United complete a deal for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Van de Beek has started just six Premier League games in three years and wants to play first-team football, while doubts persist over Martial's fitness record.

Lisandro Martinez was included in the squad for the trip to Norway after recovering from a foot injury, while Mason Mount is set to make his first appearance for the club.

Ten Hag has been welcoming back players to Carrington since last Thursday for pre-season training and this fixture (4pm kick-off) is the first chance to get some match fitness into the legs.

United then head to Edinburgh next Wednesday (July 19) to face Lyon, before travelling to the United States later that day to begin their pre-season tour, which includes games against Arsenal, Wrexham, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.
