Why Man Utd fans are protesting ahead of Liverpool game tonight

Manchester United and Liverpool resume rivalries on Monday night at Old Trafford amid a cloud of discontent among members of the Red Army.

The two clubs are the most successful in English football, but recently United have fallen behind their Merseyside rivals in competing for major honours.

United find themselves at the bottom of the Premier League table for the first time since August 1992, and have lost four consecutive league games for the first time since February 1979.

While Liverpool lifted the Premier League title in 2020, the Champions League in 2019 and the FA Cup last summer, United haven't won a league title since 2013, and their last European trophy was six years ago.

Fans have laid much of the blame squarely at the foot of the Glazer family, who have owned the club since 2005, and a protest is set to take place before tonight's clash at Old Trafford.

After the Glazers took over, they plunged the club into debts believed to be around £550m almost overnight.

That debt ballooned to £700m in 2010, and now stands at around £495.7m.

All in all, the Glazer family have taken £1.1billion out of the club in the last 17 years, including £743m in interest payments on the money they used to purchase the club in May 2005.

The family have also paid themselves £133m in dividends in the last 10 years - the most of any owner in the Premier League during that period. United's stature means they enjoy vast revenue streams, but have so far not seen a net spend outweigh that income in 10 years.

In contrast, he owners of arch-rivals Manchester City having plunged over £650m of their own money into the club during the same period. With Old Trafford in dire need of refurbishment, and a whopping £1bn wasted as part of a disastrous recruitment policy, many fans have had enough and will make their voices heard during Monday's game.

The Manchester United fan group ‘The 1958’, a reference to the Munich air disaster, is calling on supporters to stage a mass walkout during the match, and will also be protesting beforehand.

The game at Old Trafford kicks off at 8pm.
