Manchester United have opted against appealing Casemiro's red card on Sunday as they don't believe they can successfully get it overturned.
The Brazilian was given his marching orders on Sunday in the goalless draw with Southampton and will now miss the next four domestic games. Referee Anthony Taylor originally dished out a yellow card for Casemiro's lunge on Carlos Alcaraz, before VAR advised him to consult the monitor, after which he dismissed the midfielder.
Casemiro has been hugely influential for the Red Devils with his absence often telling. Erik ten Hag's side still need to consolidate their top four spot and could add further silverware with the capture of the FA Cup, but will be without the midfielder for several key matches.
The Daily Mail has reported that United don't think it is likely that an appeal would result in a successful outcome from their point of view, and as a result have opted against lodging one. Casemiro will miss the FA Cup last eight clash against Fulham as well as league games against Newcastle, Brentford and Everton.
Despite being known as an aggressive player, the United midfielder arrived in England with a perfect disciplinary record. Ten Hag did shake Taylor's hand after the Southampton stalemate but bemoaned the fact Casemiro had now been dismissed twice in a matter of weeks.
He said: "Casemiro has played over 500 games in Europe. He never had a red card. And now, what is it? In [the space of a few] games and 20 games [in total] in the Premier League, he has two red cards."
David de Gea claimed that his team-mate had been "unlucky" and called for more consistency from the officials going forward. The Spaniard though was confident the squad could cope without Casemiro in the coming weeks.
"I think Casemiro was unlucky. He tried to touch the ball and his foot came up high. I think the referees need to show more consistency. Sometimes they show a red card and sometimes they don't," he told Sky Sports. "It's going to be tough, he's a big player. We will miss him for four games but we have a big squad.
"We have players coming from the bench who do well. We will keep working hard. It should be a game to win today but the game changed when we lost a man in the team. We tried our best to score but it was difficult. They had some chances but in the end we showed good team spirit. We have to take the point and keep going."
