Why Lionel Messi World Cup final goal for Argentina vs France was checked by VAR in extra time

Lionel Messi dramatically put Argentina back in front against France in the World Cup final after Kylian Mbappe had dragged France back into the game.

Messi and Di Maria put Argentina in command but a brace in the space of less than 100 seconds from Mbappe brought the current world champions level.

The game went to extra time and after a first half filled with chances, Argentina re-took the lead through their captain, but there was some controversy surrounding their goal.

Lautaro Martinez was played in behind the French defence and after unleashing a fierce shot that was saved by Hugo Lloris, Messi was on hand to tap home the rebound.

Many didn't think that Messi's shot had crossed the line but it was confirmed by goal-line technology the ball was over the line. The huge decisions didn't stop there though as the goal was checked by VAR for offside.

Messi was not the recipient of the decision though, it was in fact Martinez who appeared to perhaps just been beyond the final France defender, but the semi-automated offside confirmed he was onside.

Argentina were on the brink of World Cup glory but Mbappe again put France back on terms with a second penalty just minutes before the end of extra time.
