ESPN “College GameDay” personality Kirk Herbstreit won’t be making a national championship prediction. The national championship is between the Ohio State Buckeyes and Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Monday, Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
Herbstreit, who played quarterback at Ohio State from 1989-1993, is commentating the game, which will be televised on ESPN. Television commentators are not allowed to predict the score or winner of games that they are commentating.
There’s no doubt that Herbstreit wants Ohio State to win, but he’ll do his best to remain unbiased as the Buckeyes take on Notre Dame. The majority of members of the media are picking Ohio State to win. The Buckeyes have a lot of offensive firepower and have looked dominant in all three of their College Football Playoff victories.
ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) gives Ohio State a 55.3% chance to win against Notre Dame. The Buckeyes are looking to win their first national championship since 2014 (first year of the playoff). Notre Dame is hoping to to erase a significant title drought. The Fighting Irish have not won a national championship since 1988, but are one of the most storied programs in college football history.
