Why Kilmarnock's Asda store won't take part in bargain £1 meal deal scheme

Asda announced a bargain £1 meal deal last week in a bid to ease the cost of living crisis for the elderly.

Shoppers over the age of 60 will be able to benefit from a cheap ‘winter warmer’ meal deal at Asda cafes as the temperatures begin to dip.

The offer will include soup, a roll and unlimited tea and coffee for just £1 in any of the supermarket’s 205 cafes — all day, every day throughout November and December.

And three Ayrshire Asda stores are on the list of those taking part.

However, shoppers have been miffed that the Kilmarnock store has been left off of the list.

The Queen's Drive shop axed its cafe in May last year as the supermarket responded to an increase in online shopping orders.

A spokesman for Asda said in 2021: "Throughout the pandemic our customers’ shopping habits have changed and the demand for online groceries has increased significantly.

"To help adapt to this we have made changes to our Kilmarnock store by removing the café and adding in extra space for online groceries."

However, Ayr, Irvine and Ardrossan stores will be taking part in the bargain cafe scheme.

The new initiative will run alongside the current ‘Kids eat for £1’ offer which continues to be hugely popular, with Asda having given out more than 557,000 meals since the launch in late June.

Mohsin Issa, Asda’s co-owner, said: “We know that this winter is set to be incredibly hard for thousands of pensioners as they worry about how to keep themselves warm in the face of rising living costs and a fixed income.

“We’ve already been able to serve over half a million meals through our Kids Eat for £1 initiative in our cafes and we’re hoping our new offer of soup and hot drinks for over 60s will prove just as impactful for those who need it most.”
