Why Jurgen Klopp said 'nothing' to his Liverpool players after Man City defeat

Jurgen Klopp says there is little to gain from dressing down his Liverpool players before they reconvene on Sunday after a painful 4-1 loss to Manchester City.

After Mohamed Salah's opener was cancelled out by Julian Alvarez before the break, the Reds capitulated in the second period at the Etihad. Goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Jack Grealish condemned Klopp's side to their ninth defeat of the Premier League campaign.

In a three-game week that will also see Liverpool host league leaders Arsenal after Tuesday's trip to Chelsea, the demoralising defeat was the worst possible start to such a vital run of fixtures in their top-four chase.

And Klopp admits there was nothing he could say to his lift squad after the game, saying he would prefer to to talk to his players on Sunday when they report for duty at the AXA Training Centre ahead of that visit to Chelsea.

"We have to do that (assess the game) tomorrow," the Reds boss said. "I told the boys there is nothing from my side to say tonight. Everything is obvious. Everybody needs to think about it himself. And tomorrow we have to talk about it, but that is nothing for now.

"It’s not a lot of time but there’s time because we play Tuesday. We should play better, especially more consistently. Being good when you are feeling good is okay, but not being good when you don’t feel 100% is obviously not possible in the Premier League and that is what is happening at the moment.

"We spoke about it in the press conference yesterday (on Friday) where being 1-0 down this year changed pretty much everything for us. I don’t like to mention these things but I cannot ignore it as well."

Klopp added: "Today we conceded two quick goals. Then it’s super difficult here, if not nearly impossible, to come back from a two-goal deficit. But we can make it more difficult for them if we stick to the things you did in your good moments and that was not there anymore. That’s why and the difference was so massive.

"Wow. It’s not nice to be part of the team when the crowd starts going, ‘whey, whey!’, when they pass. It’s not nice. It still happens from time to time."
