Wimbledon is well underway after an intense weekend of action on the tennis courts.
Rafael Nadal is looking strong once again as he continues to make his way through the rounds.
However, many fans were expecting to see Roger Federer there, but other than enjoying the show courtside, he hasn’t lifted a racket yet.
It has raised concerns that he is stepping away from playing professionally, especially since it has been nearly a year since he last entered a competition.
He has been open about the situation and shares his frustration with the fans who are itching to see him get back out there.
Why isn’t Roger Federer playing Wimbledon?
It doesn’t matter how good a player you are, even the best of us must take time off following an injury.
For Federer, first he had two knee surgeries in February and March 2020, leading to his absence on the court that year.
The same is true now, as in August 2021 he had another knee operation, resulting in him pulling out of playing at the tournaments since.
In fact, his last competition was Wimbledon 2021, leaving fans of the tournament concerned that he might not be returning to the court again.
Has Roger Federer retired?
The short answer is no, as Roger has made it clear he is doing everything he can to get back on the court as soon as possible.
Speaking to Swiss magazine Caminada, he said: "I’m waiting for the doctors’ okay.
"I’m ready to give it my all again. I feel like a racehorse scratching its stall and wanting to race."
It will come as a relief to his legions of fans, especially considering he is now 40 years old.
Many players choose to retire young, in their mid-to-late 20s, but Federer is still proving to be one of the best in the history of the sport.
There is no way of knowing when he might finish for good, but all signs point to him getting back out there as soon as he is fit and able.
Is Roger Federer planning a comeback?
Even better is the fact that he has indicated when he wants to play professionally again this year.
He is aiming to make an appearance at the Laver Cup in September 2022, with the tournament taking place in London at the 02 Arena.
Rafael Nadal shared the news on Instagram, with the two set to play doubles together at the event.
Roger also wrote that he was "really looking forward" to getting back into competition later this year.
"It’s no secret that I love the event and I’m super excited to be returning to The O2 and to London, one of the greatest cities in the world,” he added.
