Why isn’t Manchester United vs Southampton Premier League game live on TV in UK?

Manchester United and Southampton face off in the Premier League this afternoon but think twice before reaching for the TV remote.

United are at Old Trafford a week on from a humbling 7-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool at Anfield, firmly stopping their remarkable momentum and giving the Reds a much-needed boost.

Erik ten Hag appeared unable to do wrong since the turn of the year, and perhaps earlier, with a fine run of form prompting suggestions of a late surge for the Premier League title.

But those whispers have now been silenced, and anything less than a victory over struggling Southampton this afternoon would have United looking over their shoulders rather than hopes of leapfrogging cross-city rivals Manchester City.

But the game will not be broadcast live on television in the UK despite its Sunday slot.

The match was orginally scheduled for 3pm GMT on Saturday, March 10, meaning the traditional ‘3pm blackout’ prevented it from being broadcast live on UK TV. It was then moved due to United’s Europa League commitments against Real Betis, and cannot then be selected for TV coverage.

Instead, league-leaders Arsenal head to Fulham at the same time, which will be broadcast on Sky Sports. West Ham host Aston Villa at the same time, but their own Europa Conference League commitments have also prevented live UK TV coverage.
