ITV has announced it will be airing a number of shows in tribute to Paul O'Grady. The change of schedule comes following the death of the presenter and comedian on Tuesday at the age of 67.
Tonight (Wednesday) at 5pm on ITV1, Paul O'Grady's For The Love Of Dogs: A Royal Special, which featured an appearance from the Queen Consort, will air instead of The Chase. The broadcaster will also pay tribute to O'Grady in a special titled For The Love Of Paul O'Grady on Sunday evening. The 11th series of Paul O'Grady: For The Love Dogs is due to launch on April 13.
ITV's managing director of media and entertainment Kevin Lygo said: "We are fortunate to have had a long association with Paul, at ITV. He was a huge, inimitable talent, delighting our viewers through his comedy and entertainment with a warmth, humour and joy that audiences of all generations related to and connected with."
Paul O’Grady's career spanned five decades on stage and screen. He shot to fame as the acid-tongued drag queen Lily Savage, going on to win millions of fans and a host of awards as a comedian, game show host, chat show compere, radio DJ, animal rights champion and bestselling author.
The comedian and TV presenter died “unexpectedly but peacefully” on Tuesday evening, his partner, Andre Portasio, said in a statement. O’Grady has been hailed as a “trailblazer” for breaking into the mainstream broadcasting landscape with his alter ego and for his charity work around animals and Aids.
Mr Portasio’s statement said: “It is with great sadness that I inform you that Paul has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully yesterday evening. We ask, at this difficult time that whilst you celebrate his life you also respect our privacy as we come to terms with this loss.
“He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who enjoyed his humour, wit and compassion. I know that he would want me to thank you for all the love you have shown him over the years.”
