Why is Qatar hosting the 2022 World Cup?

For many, the World Cup is about enjoying the world's most prestigious international tournament in British summer time, quenching the thirst of your football fix after a short break from non-stop domestic action.

But this season will be different, with football in the Premier League grinding to a halt as the tournament takes place in the winter months for the first time in its history.

Gareth Southgate and England will be looking to go one step further from their 2018 World Cup semi-final defeat to Croatia. The Three Lions also finished runners-up in Euro 2020, losing on penalties to Italy at Wembley last July.

And whilst their record in tournament football his significantly improved under the guidance of Southgate, their Nations League form leading up to the tournament are far from the ideal preparations ahead of maintaining that record.

The tournament kicks off on November 20th, with hosts Qatar in action against Ecuador at the Al Bayt Stadium before England take on Iran in the second game of the tournament.

Why is Qatar hosting the 2022 World Cup?

The Arab nation were up against USA, Japan, Australia and South Korea as they all bid to host the tournament in 2022.

Qatar were seen as outsiders when the bidding process occurred, but their public message based on attracting new football fans to the Middle East was in line with FIFA's aim to expand world football.

Despite claims that Qatar had paid FIFA officials £3 million in bribes, they were cleared after a two-year investigation. Therefore, the Middle East nation are the host country for the 2022 tournament as 32 teams search for the trophy.
