Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company, has announced plans to acquire cybersecurity startup Wiz for $32 billion in an all-cash transaction. This is Google’s most expensive acquisition to date. Though this is Google’s second attempt to acquire Wiz, their previous effort in 2024 failed due to a tough regulatory climate.

What is Wiz?
Wiz is a cloud security startup founded in 2020 by former Microsoft executives, including Assaf Rappaport, Yinon Costica, Roy Reznik, and Ami Luttwak. These founders previously led Microsoft’s Cloud Security Group. Today, Wiz has become one of the most successful cybersecurity firms and serves clients like Morgan Stanley, BMW, and Salesforce.
The company provides AI-powered cloud security solutions that help businesses detect and fix vulnerabilities across cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. Instead of relying on traditional endpoint security, Wiz provides agentless security scanning, which makes it faster and more scalable for enterprises.
Why Does Google Want to Buy Wiz?
There’s a reason behind Google spending $32 billion on Wiz. Google wants to buy Wiz to:
- Strengthening Google Cloud Security: Google is playing a catch-up game when it comes to the cloud market, where AWS and Microsoft Azure lead. Wiz’s security solutions will make Google Cloud a more attractive choice for enterprises.
- Competing with Microsoft and AWS: Microsoft has robust security offerings, such as Microsoft Defender, and AWS has deep security integrations. Acquiring Wiz would allow Google to close the gap with these competitors by providing a powerful cloud-native security platform that supports multi-cloud environments.
- Expanding Multicloud Capabilities: Wiz’s ability to work across multiple cloud providers, including AWS, Azure, and Oracle, aligns with Google’s strategy to support multi-cloud environments. This would help Google attract customers who use hybrid or multi-cloud setups by reducing concerns about vendor lock-in.
From its earliest days, Google’s strong security focus has made us a leader in keeping people safe online. Today, businesses and governments that run in the cloud are looking for even stronger security solutions, and greater choice in cloud computing providers. Together, Google Cloud and Wiz will turbocharge improved cloud security and the ability to use multiple clouds.
Sundar Pichai, CEO, Google
Wiz and Google Cloud are fully committed to continue supporting and protecting customers across all major clouds, helping keep them safe and secure wherever they operate. This is an exciting moment for our company, but an even more important one for customers and partners, as this acquisition will bolster our mission to improve security and prevent breaches by providing additional resources and deep AI expertise.

What Will Happen to Wiz After Acquisition?
Once the deal is done, Wiz will join Google Cloud’s business. In addition, all Wiz products will continue to be available across all other major cloud services.
Will This Deal Pass Regulatory Hurdles?
Given Alphabet’s past antitrust challenges, regulators may examine this acquisition closely. However, with a new U.S. administration under President Trump, some analysts believe antitrust scrutiny might be less aggressive, making approval more likely.
