Why is Abide With Me sung before the FA Cup final and what are the lyrics?

Manchester City take on Manchester United at Wembley this afternoon in the FA Cup final.

The oldest footballing competition in the world, the tournament is centered around tradition and even more so this year, with two of the fiercest rivals in football history meeting in the final for a high-stakes derby match.

This year also sees it revert back to its usual 3pm kick-off for the first time in more than a decade due to security and logistical reasons, having been held later in the day since 2011.

But before the much-anticipated game gets underway, another tradition will be carried out, with popular hymn Abide With Me set to be belted out under the arch usually around 15 minutes before kick-off.

It is a Christian hymn writter by Scottish Anglican cleric Henry Francis Lyte and serves as prayer for God to remain present with the speaker throughout life and death. While there are several alternative tunes, it is most often sung to composer William Henry Monk's tune Eventide.

Lyte penned the words in 1847 while he lay dying from tuberculosis, and he passed away just three weeks after he finished it, with the hymn sung for the very first time at his funeral.

It was first sung before the FA Cup final in 1927 - which Cardiff City won 1-0 against Arsenal - and has been an ever-present since then, with eyewitness reports from the time describing hearing the crowd singing the hymn as "an unforgettable and indescribable experience for us all".

Abide with Me has also been sung prior to the kick-off at every Rugby League Challenge Cup Final since 1929, while it also featured in the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, with Emeli Sandé singing it as a tribute to the victims of the 7/7 terrorist attacks.

The lyrics in full

Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;
Earth's joys grow dim; its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see;
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word,
But as Thou dwell'st with Thy disciples, Lord,
Familiar, condescending, patient, free.
Come not to sojourn, but abide with me.

Come not in terror, as the King of kings,
But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings;
Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea.
Come, Friend of sinners, thus abide with me.

Thou on my head in early youth didst smile,
And though rebellious and perverse meanwhile,
Thou hast not left me, oft as I left Thee.
On to the close, O Lord, abide with me.

I need Thy presence every passing hour.
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me
