I read Grace Dent’s article with great interest (‘The biggest gift I’ve ever given myself is learning to love life without booze’: Grace Dent on being festive and sober, 1 December). Being weak-willed, I’m not giving up alcohol for ever, but I’ve decided not to drink for the rest of December so I can enjoy the festive season more. My next drink will be in 2024 – a glass of champagne after the bells, so Slàinte mhath in advance!

• Wendy Bradley (Letters, 4 December) suggests making copies of the Parthenon marbles to display in UK cities and schools. Manchester already has a copy in the Manchester Art Gallery, given by King George IV in 1824. They are casts attached to the walls, which might make them difficult to lend to the British Museum should it need a copy.

• My sympathy for the supporters of Grimsby Town FC who felt shamed by Boris Johnson’s choice of bobble hat bearing their club’s initials (‘Serious disrepute’: Grimsby Town fans react after Boris Johnson wears club’s hat, 7 December) was rather tempered when I read that Grimsby elected a “fierce supporter” of the former prime minister as their MP, and she donated the hat.
