Why have sex toys been banned from Etsy?

Etsy is introducing a ban on sex toys and many other erotic items.

The online marketplace's strengthened policy set out the types of products that are prohibited, and how permitted "mature" products should be displayed.

Examples of adult toys and sexual accessories that are acceptable are also detailed, including restraints, handcuffs, and "sex furniture".

The rules include bans on:

  • Adult toys designed to be inserted into the body

  • Pornography, including vintage adult magazines and films

  • Using human models to display an item, if body parts such as genitalia, "gluteal clefts" or female nipples are visible

  • Advertising sexual services such as custom photographs and videos depicting nudity

  • Some non-photographic art where there is explicit nudity and the context is sexual – such as depictions of a sex act

Etsy has faced criticism from sellers, who told the BBC that they feel let down by the adjusted rules, which they predict will result in a loss of revenue.

Anna, founder of sex toy company Simply Elegant Glass, told the BBC: "As creators who have helped make Etsy what it is and who have remained loyal to their platform for years, we feel betrayed."

Why have sex toys been banned on Etsy?

Etsy says the ban has been introduced to keep users safe and reflects industry-wide trends.

"Etsy has long had policies prohibiting certain mature content and providing guidance on appropriately listing adult items. Today, we are building on this foundation, updating our standards, and introducing more rigorous guidelines," Etsy VP of trust and safety, Alice Wu Paulus, wrote on the site's forum announcing the changes.

"We carefully crafted this policy with the goal of continuing to enable creative expression and the spirit of our marketplace, while taking into account evolving industry standards," she said.

However, Etsy users such as Anna feel those concerns could be addressed by more clearly labelling and separating adult product listings on Esty, which she accused of "forsaking content-filtering tools in favour of blanket bans".

A Czech Republic-based seller of premium silicone sex toys told the BBC that many businesses who relied on Etsy would see a "significant drop in income".

When will the ban be introduced?

The ban will start from July 29.
