Why has Eggheads moved to Channel 5?

After 18 years on BBC Two, the legendary quiz show Eggheads has found a new home.

Jeremy Vine, along with his panels of professionals and 'challengers', will once again be taking to Channel 5 for the brand new series which airs on Monday, February 14.

The production team announced the move in March last year. At the time, the host, who took over from original presenter Dermot Murnaghan in 2008, revealed to Joanna Lumley: "This is my big announcement. I don't have many of these I tell you.

"The programme which I've presented for more than 10 years, Eggheads, one of the greatest quizzes in the history of British TV, is moving to Channel 5 later this year."

Daniel Pearl, commissioning editor at Channel 5 explained, "I'm delighted that Eggheads, one of the UK's most loved quiz shows, has found a brand new home on Channel 5. This is yet another step in the transformation of Channel 5 as it grows its audience rapidly."

A BBC spokesperson added: "We sometimes have to make difficult decisions in order to grow new shows and we would like to thank the Eggheads and host Jeremy Vine for their time on the BBC and wish them well with their next chapter."

The show has since been a huge success for Channel 5 and has consistently beaten the slot averages with the show averaging a 447k audience with 3.1 per cent share.

The new series, which airs this evening, will comprise of 60 episodes as opposed to the usual 40.

Eggheads starts on Channel 5 from Monday, February 14 at 6.30pm with a Celebrity Special, and you will be able to catch up on any missed episodes on My5.
