Why Gonzaga’s Chet Holmgren is securing his spot as the top prospect in the 2022 NBA draft

Gonzaga freshman Chet Holmgren earned the No. 1 overall spot in my latest mock draft and I don’t see him giving it up any time soon.

There is a sequence from earlier this season when the broadcasters literally start laughing at how much he is dominating the game.

How many other prospects can you name who can use their 7-foot-5 wingspan to block a shot, take the ball up the floor in transition, then hit a pull-up jumper off the dribble? Chet has done that!

On defense, he would join Anthony Davis and Mo Bamba as the only freshmen on record with more than 7.0 defensive rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game in the same season.

On offense, he was one of the first two players to notch 30 dunks and 30 three-pointers this season. Among those with at least 70 shots in each zone, Chet is also the only college basketball player on record to ever shoot better than 80% at the rim and 40% beyond the arc in the same season.

It’s dumb when Chet is able to do on the floor and any team should scramble to get him.
