Gareth Southgate has backed Harry Maguire to deliver ahead of England’s last 16 clash with Senegal. Critics had questioned the Manchester United captain's inclusion in the 26-man squad before the World Cup.
A combination of poor form and injuries saw United boss Erik ten Hag drop his skipper to the bench for most of the campaign so far. Since the 4-0 defeat to Brentford in August, Maguire has started just one Premier League game.
Scarce first-team action is hardly ideal preparation for a World Cup but Southgate has stuck by his man. In 2018 and 2021, the Three Lions manager made Maguire an integral part of his plans.

So far, that faith has been repaid in Qatar. The United skipper has arguably been England’s best performer in their opening three games, earning praise for his display against the United States, in particular.
Few supporters would begrudge Maguire the opportunity to start when England take on Senegal on Sunday. Southgate, under immense pressure from sections of the fanbase pre-tournament, stuck his neck on the line to defend the 29-year-old - and the move paid off.
Reporters made Maguire the focal point of discussion before the last-16 tie and, yet again, his international manager tipped him to step up. Southgate said: “He’s a good player. He knows we have complete belief in him. He’s had huge performances.
“He’s been a bit unfortunate with changes of managers and philosophies (at Man United) and an injury. He’s missed time. But he felt the other night the love of the fans.”
