Why Gabriel's red card for Arsenal was overturned against Leeds United

The atmosphere reached fever pitch inside Elland Road when Chris Kavanagh pointed to the spot in stoppage time. Leeds had already missed one penalty through Patrick Bamford on the hour-mark and the Leeds forward had also had a goal controversially ruled out earlier in the half.

Gabriel was the guilty culprit when he kicked out at Bamford in the box and the Arsenal defender was shown a red card. That was until Kavanagh was summoned to the pitchside monitor to scan his eyes over the incident once more.

When he returned to the field of play, Kavanagh carried with him a yellow card, and was pointing in favour of an Arsenal free-kick. Although many were left scratching their heads, the Daily Cannon have provided their own interpretation of the controversial incident.

The Arsenal news page claim that Kavanagh didn't point to the spot because of Gabriel's kick-out, but instead because he deemed Gabriel to have denied a goal scoring opportunity.

Therefore, once he came to the conclusion that Bamford had in fact fouled Gabriel beforehand, Kavanagh then had to overturn the red card too, before brandishing the yellow for the kick-out.

The Daily Cannon did concede that whether the kick-out was worthy of a red card is open to debate. But for the Leeds fans digesting a sixth game on the spin without a win at the full-time whistle, they will argue that they have every reason to feel aggrieved, and rightly so.
