Why Fabian Schar 'hammers' Dan Burn in every Newcastle set-piece training session

Fabian Schar 'hammers' Dan Burn in every Newcastle United set-piece training session because he never scores headers. That is the view of team-mate Sean Longstaff, who agrees the towering defender is better with his feet than his head when it comes to attacking.

Burn has become an indispensable member of Newcastle's defence since rejoining the club in January. The versatile defender initially partnered Schar at centre-back, but has now established himself at left-back following the summer arrival of Sven Botman.

However, Burn is yet to open his account in black-and-white despite his obvious height advantage at set-pieces. The 6ft 7ins defender has come close on several occasions, and remains confident he will net his first Newcastle goal by the end of the season.

Burn took part in a game of 'Agree or Disagree' with Longstaff ahead of the Boxing Day clash with Leicester City, and agreed with the statement that he is better with the ball at his feet. This led Longstaff to jokingly recall Schar's frustration in every set-piece session before a matchday.

The midfielder told NUFC TV: "The day before a game when we're doing set-pieces, Fabby just hammers him the whole session. Simba [Jason Tindall] will say we're going to target Burny here, and it'll come to him and he'll score or he'll miss, and Fabby will just stands there and hammers him. He says 'how are you getting the header over me? You don't score'!"

Burn 'strongly agreed' with the statement, and explained: "Probably not defensively but definitely in attacking. It's something that I've never been great at, and I don't know why.

"I've probably always been this height, and I think if I had scored more goals, I probably would have had a better career than I have. It's not for lack of trying, I know that I can still score goals but I should score more."
