Why do Wales football fans wear bucket hats?

The red, yellow and green bucket hat has become synonymous with Welsh football culture, injecting a dash of colour and brightness to the stands.

It's part of the Wales football matchday uniform, as much a part of a fan's outfit as the red shirt of Wales itself.

But what makes their presence even more joyful is knowing that the accessory's growth in popularity was completely organic and came from a Welsh business.

Tim Williams set up 'The Spirit of '58' shop in 2010, selling unofficial Wales football merchandise, with the bucket hat becoming a popular item. He says he never expected what was born out of love for the Manchester music scene in the 1980s and 1990s to become a symbol of Welsh football.

"As a group of lads living in Bala we used to enjoy going to a lot of gigs and that (bucket hats) seemed to be the get-up at the time" Tim previously told ITV. "I never intended for it to be like this, it was more about having a bit of fun, add a bit of colour to the Wales support and then it's just grown over the years."

Williams is out in Qatar to support Wales in the group stages of the 2022 World Cup, and will no doubt be welcomed with a sea of his very own bucket hats plus replicas.

They have become so popular in recent years that the Football Association of Wales decided not to produce official merchandise for Euro 2016 for fear of encroaching on an already booming, and organic, market.

"We never got involved with that, but we’re happy to push it and have our players wearing them — it’s unique to us, it’s a unique sign of being Welsh," FAW head of football operations Mark Evans previously told WalesOnline. "We’ve got people here at the FAW who are able to recognise what’s happening because they are fans themselves. The majority of the stuff that we do comes from the fans. We just amplify what’s coming off the terraces."

Sales for the must-have item sky-rocketed during Wales' Euro 2016 journey, which saw them reach the semi-finals before losing to eventual winners Portugal.

In the run-up to Wales' first appearance at a World Cup in 64 years, a number of large-scale models of bucket hats were erected around the country to ramp up support for Wales and excitement for the tournament.

The Spirit of '58 bucket hats are priced from £16 but good luck finding items in stock!
