Sunny, 9, asks: why do people have long hair out of their nose?
It makes you look wise
To keep your nose warm when it’s cold outside
To stop bacteria and pollen going up your nose
To stop bad smells going up your nose
Theo, 7, asks: why do men have nipples?
So they are able to give milk to their babies
For the first few weeks in the womb, male and female babies grow the same
So they don’t feel left out
So dressmakers and tailors know where to take men’s chest measurements
Reuben, 7, asks: how many breeds of dog are there?
12 breeds
5,000 breeds
256 breeds
At least 356 breeds
Hannah, 9, asks: does it rain on other planets?
No, never!
Yes, but it doesn’t rain water like on Earth, it rains other things
Yes, it rains on all planets, but Earth has the most rain, especially England
It only rains on Earth and Uranus
Tovah, 4, asks: why do cheetahs have spots?
So other animals can’t see them very easily
They have cheetah pox – it’s like chickenpox but cheetahs get it
Each cheetah family has a different pattern of spots, so they can tell who’s who
Way back in time they cheated in races and were punished with lots of spots
1:C - Nose hairs stop unwanted things going up your nose, like pollen, bacteria and viruses. Some people get long ones when they get older. Hair follicles become more sensitive to hormones, so they grow longer and more coarsely., 2:B - For the first few weeks of growing in the womb, all babies grow as females. It is during this time that nipples are created and all babies get a pair. Later, a chemical called testosterone starts being made in male babies but the nipples are already there and stay. , 3:D - The World Canine Organisation recognises 356 breeds across the world. However, if you include mixed breeds, too, experts suggest there are more than 500 different breeds., 4:B - Yes, it does rain on other planets but it doesn’t rain water. Methane rainstorms occur on Titan. Sulphuric acid rain falls on Venus, dry-ice snows on Mars and it rains diamonds on Saturn!, 5:A - Cheetah spots are great camouflage, so the animal can blend in with its surroundings. This makes hunting prey easier – and helps hide cheetahs from animals that hunt them.
