Why didn’t the Giants re-sign Saquon Barkey in 2024 NFL free agency?

If you’re a New York Giants fan, you’re probably wondering how you got to the point where running back Saquon Barkley is playing for the rival Philadelphia Eagles in the 2025 Super Bowl.

The Giants letting Barkley walk in free agency was one of the more confusing decisions in NFL free agency last year, with the Eagles quickly jumping on him and watching him thrive once the season got going.

Barkley is a big reason why Philadelphia is playing against the Kansas City Chiefs in this year’s Super Bowl. How did the Giants get here?

It all came down to Barkley’s contract, with the running back sharing over the summer that he became “fed up” with how negotiations were going with New York.

Hard Knocks revealed that Giants general manager Joe Schoen wanted Barkley to test the free agency market for him to gauge his worth and circle back with the team once he did it.

Well, Barkley did just that, and he left for Philadelphia in the process. That’s how he landed with the Eagles; the Giants didn’t want to pay him right off the bat. This backfired for New York… spectacularly.
