Why Daizen Maeda's equaliser was ruled out against Hibernian

VAR adjudged the ball to have gone out of play in the buildup to Daizen Maeda's disallowed goal against Hibernian this afternoon.

The Japanese attacker thought he drew Celtic level at Easter Road, and although the goal was initially given, it was soon ruled out.

Referee Steven McLean was told to disallow it because VAR thought the ball went out of play in the buildup. McLean didn't need to go to the monitor and review the incident because it was a factual overturn.

Arne Engels played Alistair Johnston in behind, although the Belgian's pass, in the eyes of the officials, trickled out of play before the right-back flashed across goal.

With today's defeat, Celtic remain 13 points ahead of city rivals Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership, although they could shut the gap to 10 points with a win over St. Mirren at Ibrox later this afternoon.

Brendan Rodgers' men will look to bounce back against Aberdeen on Tuesday evening.
