Why Cristiano Ronaldo was stripped of Bruno Fernandes goal amid Portugal confusion vs Uruguay

There was plenty of confusion over the opening goal between Portugal vs Uruguay on Monday night in a tense affair in World Cup group H. A goalless first half had many wanting a more entertaining tie, though the first goal certainly opened things up from both sides.

Seemingly a cross from Bruno Fernandes met the run of Cristiano Ronaldo, who appeared to flick the ball off his head and into the back of the net. The 37-year-old claimed the goal, wheeling off in celebration to score a second in what appears to be his final World Cup.

Confusion had arisen shortly after though as FIFA officially handed the goal to Ronaldo, but the announcer at the Lusali Stadium gave the goal to Fernandes. After extensive viewing, FIFA eventually reversed their decision and gave the goal to the Manchester United playmaker.

It was handed to him as a first goal of his tournament, with claims that Ronaldo didn't actually touch the ball as it made its way into the net. After the goal was scored, Arsenal fan Piers Morgan tweeted: "Boom @Cristiano.", celebrating his goal shortly after releasing an interview with the striker that ended up in his exit from Manchester United.

The scorer being changed to Fernandes led to the presenter receiving some criticism, with Specsavers replying: "It was Bruno, do you need an appointment?" The midfielder doubled his tally for the World Cup when he scored from the penalty spot after a handball in the box was given after a VAR check.

In search of a hattrick in injury time, Fernandes then saw a late strike saved by the goalkeeper before another shot hit the post, slumping to the ground in missing the opportunity to take the match ball.
