Why Champions League anthem was played before Sporting vs Tottenham but won't be at Liverpool

The Champions League anthem blasted out in traditional fashion at the Estadio Jose Alvalade as the Tottenham Hotspur players took to the pitch to face Sporting CP. The game in Lisbon was Tottenham's first game since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II last week, which saw all Premier League fixtures postponed at the weekend.

After hosting Marseille in their Champions League opener last week, Spurs travelled to Portugal for their second European tie of the season, and the classic anthem was played as both team lined-up ahead of kick-off.

However, the iconic tune won't be played before Liverpool's game against Ajax at Anfield, nor at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening, when Graham Potter takes charge of his first Chelsea game against Red Bull Salzburg.

That's because the anthem will not be played before European matches played at home by British sides this week as a mark of respect towards Queen Elizabeth II. Therefore, it won't be played at Ibrox before Rangers' tie against Napoli, nor Manchester City's clash with Borussia Dortmund - as both clubs are playing their matches at home.

Clubs will pay their respects towards the Queen, with a period of silence ahead of kick-off. Players are also wearing black armbands during the Champions League fixtures, and flags have been lowered to half-mast.
